The backwashing activated carbon filter is a type of carbon water filter that comes in a form of granules.
Backwashing carbon filter uses a tank to store filtering media.
How Backwashing carbon filters work
The system contains a timer valve and media tank.
The media is stored inside the tank and a controlled timer valve automatically backwashes the system.
Untreated water passes through the media inside the tank that removes all contaminants.
Clean or treated water leaves the tank leaving contaminants trapped inside the media.
After some time the media get clogged meaning the system is not capable of treating contaminated water anymore.
During this time the media require to be cleaned. The process of cleaning the media is called the backwash process. That’s why the system is backwash.
- Granular activated carbon water filter cartridge
- Activated carbon block filter cartridge
- Activated carbon water filter pitcher
- Activated Carbon Block VS Granular Activated Carbon filter
The backwashing process is where a programmed timer valve comes in. It allows water to get into the tank in the reverse direction collecting all contaminants the media has collected and flushing it away.
During the backwashing process the contaminants the media have collected flush away leaving you with clean media to treat water.

Carbon backwash filter vs cartridge
Both backwash and Cartridge carbon filter contaminated water flows through the media and contaminants get trapped inside the media. Cartridge carbon filter after some time (like 6 months to 1 year) clog and there is no way to clean them but you throw it away.
Backwash carbon filter whenever they clog you just set the valve to clean itself leaving you with clean media for treating your contaminated water.
The backwash carbon filter lasts for over 10 years while cartridge-style last for 6 months to 1 year.
Backwash water filter granulated media come stored in a tank while the cartridge comes in a block.
