To make understand better what is a water softener salt let’s learn what it does in a water softener.

The whole process of a Water softener happens in the resin tank which has resin beads.

The resin beads in resin tanks are negatively charged.

When the hard water flows in the resin tank the resin beads which are negatively charged attracted hard water minerals which are positively charged leaving you with soft water.

Over time the resin beads attract the minerals that are the presence in hard water making them ineffective or not work properly.

The beads need to be cleaned and that’s where water softener salt comes in to clean the overcoated resin beads.

That means if you have a salt-based water softener you must use salt to clean resin beads so as to operate correctly.

Now you understand resin beads are recharged using salt which is mixed with water in the brine known as a brine solution. That’s why we have prepared a review of the best water softener salt.

What is water softener salts

It is sodium specifically designed to use in your salt-based water softener.

A water softener softens hard water by replacing hard minerals such as magnesium and calcium with salt.

Most people well know table salt which will not work to the water softener.

The sodium is used in the resin tank to attract positively charged ions present in your hard water making your water soft.

It is also used in the brine tank to clean coated mineral on the resin beads through a process known as regeneration.

Water softener salts types

There are two different types of water softener salt

  1. Sodium chloride

The sodium chloride is commonly used and less expensive.

It is found in various forms such as pellets, crystals, and cubes.

The crystals are produced through a process called solar evaporation, therefore it has a high chance of having particle residue which can lead to tank bridging or dirt in the tank.

Pellets fits in a household that has high water usage while crystal is used in home with low water usage.

There are different types of sodium chloride

  • Rock salt

This type of sodium chloride is the salt that is mined on the rocks or underground.

The salt may contain a trace of other minerals.

The rock salt is less expensive but can leave a mineral deposit on your brine tank resulting in a build-up in the tank causing to be cleaned several times in a year.

  • Solar salt

Solar salt is also known as sea salt.

It is found in seawater where you collect seawater in a specific area and leave it to dry.

The sun evaporates the water leaving the salt behind in the form of crystals.

The solar salt that is used in the water softener is commonly sold in the form of pellets but you can also find it in the form of crystal or blocks.

How is solar salt made

It is not the best water softener if you have extremely hard water or a large household.

This type is more likely to form the salt bridge (salt-forming one rock mass)or create buildup.

  • Evaporated salt

It is the purest and highest quality type of sodium chloride.

It is produced by heating raw salt to reduce moisture returning to pure sodium chloride.

It has less insoluble particles this means less buildup at the bottom of the tank, therefore, the tank will not be cleaned more often.

This type is best recommended for your salt-based water softener.

  1. Potassium chloride

This type is used as an alternative to sodium chloride.

It is the best choice for the person on a restricted sodium diet because it is 99.9 percent sodium-free.

The potassium chloride is not easy to find and is more expensive.

Also, potassium chloride is less effective when you want to do regeneration.

What is water softener salt made of

Water softener salt is made of sodium chloride which is used for cooking.

It is also made of a salt alternative called potassium chloride which is suitable for the person on a sodium-restricted diet.

How to add salt in a water softener

What is the best type of salt to use in a water softener?

The best salt to use in a water softener is sodium chloride. Sodium chloride is available in different types such as solar, evaporated, and rock salt. Evaporated is the purest and highest quality type of sodium chloride.
It is produced by heating raw salt to reduce moisture returning to pure sodium chloride.
It has less insoluble particles this means less buildup at the bottom of the tank, therefore, the tank will not be cleaned more often. So evaporated sodium chloride type is best recommended for your salt-based water softener but in case you choose the other make sure it is pure and contain no particles which means less bridging.
In case you are on a sodium-restricted diet use potassium chloride.

Is all water softener salt the same?

No! Sodium chloride is 100% salt and is available in different types (solar, evaporated, and rock salt) while potassium chloride is 100% free salt suitable for sodium restricted diet.

Is it safe to eat water softener salt?

Yes! Water softener salt is made of sodium chloride. It is the same as the salt we use in our home for cooking.
The only exception where the salt is not safe is when recommended by doctor to reduce intake of sodium chloride but you can use potassium chloride type.

How often do you add salt in a water softener?

Salt is added in the brine tank for regeneration. In the brine tank the salt is added water to form brine solution. Once you see water level is above the salt it is time to add more.

What happens if a water softener runs out of salt?

Water softener requires salt to clean resin beads if they are completely covered by hard water minerals. So if no salt in the water softener that means resin beads will remain over coated by hard water minerals, therefore, will not operate effectively resulting to no soft water.

How many bags of salt does a water softener use?

The amount of salt a water softener use depends on various factors such as the number of people in the household and how hard your water is. The more the number of people in your household and the harder your water is, the higher the number of bags of salt will your water softener use.
In normal cases a household with 4 people and water hardness is between 7-10 GPG will use 7-10lbs of salt so a 40 or 50 lbs bag will last for one month.

Is it okay to mix different salt

Mixing the same sodium chloride is not a problem.
You should not mix potassium chloride and sodium chloride together.
