A sediment filter is a type of water filter that removes particles and other impurities from drinking water. There are many types of these filters, each with its own advantages and disadvantages.
There are three main types of sediment filters, including string wound, pleated, spin-down, and melt blown sediment filters.
Sediment filter types
- String wound sediment filter
String wound water filters include a center cartridge that is wrapped in string. The string’s thickness varies per layer. The outer layer has a thick layer to trap the biggest particles. As you go closer to the center, the string becomes thinner and thinner as it approaches the center. The innermost layer is thinner, at the center to produce the filter’s overall rating (e.g., 5 microns).
The string’s thickness changes per layer, allowing the outside layer to capture the larger particles while becoming thinner as it approaches the center.
- Spin-down sediment filters
A spin-down sediment filter includes a housing and a head. The cartridge is kept in the housing, and the head is connected to your waterline directly.
Water goes through the head and passes through the filter inside the housing where sediment, sand, debris, and other particulates are removed. When particulates are removed, they collect at the bottom of the housing.
Once a week or monthly, open the bottom of the housing valve, place the bucket underneath, and flush the dirt that has accumulated there.
The time it takes to flush out accumulated sediment varies based on the volume of water used and the amount of sediment. You can do it on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis.
A spin-down sediment filter uses a cartridge or mesh made of stainless steel or polypropylene. The cartridge or mesh is reusable. You clean it and reuse it.

- Pleated sediment filters
Pleated sediment filters look like thin sheets folded together. The pleats are made of polypropylene and have a large surface area. The pleated sediment filter is washable and reusable, meaning once clogged with sediment, you can clean it and reuse it.
- Polypropylene melt blown sediment filter
The melt-blown sediment filter is made of polypropylene and is suitable for filtering fine particulates. With this type of sediment filter, you simply throw them away once they’ve become clogged.
Note: all the above sediment filter types are meant only to remove particulates, debris, sand, and rust, not chemicals, heavy metals, or improve water taste.
